We were created in 2004 when the second Tyne Tunnel project was being developed. There was concern that building the tunnel would have a significant impact on the river’s ecosystem, particularly for migratory fish. To mitigate for this impact the Tyne & Wear Integrated Transport Authority set aside £250,000 to fund river habitat improvements in the rest of the Tyne catchment, plus the provision of a fish pass at Hexham bridge.Tyne Rivers Trust was established using this funding, and has used the money as it was intended in improving the catchment’s rivers.
